Charles enlisted on 1st September 1914. He was 39 years old at the time. He gain promotion to the rank of Corporal on 10th June 1915, then entered the war in France with the 141st Field Ambulance the following 11th August. On 22nd November 1915 he gained further promotion to the rank of Serjeant, then was promoted again to Staff Serjeant on 31st March 1916. On 1st January 1917 he proceeded to No 21 Motor Ambulance Convoy for duty, and whilst serving with them gained further promotion to Quartermaster Serjeant. Charles returned to the UK on 27th February 1919, and was transferred to Class Z Army Reserve on 28th March 1919. He was the husband of Rachel - married on 16th June 1897, they had 3 children.
