William had previously served with the R.A.M.C. before being appointed to Durham County Constabulary on 2nd April 1914 as PC 960, 3rd class constable. In June 1914 he became a recruit to Blaydon. On 21st July 1914 he was severely reprimanded and cautioned, and ordered to perform extra duty, for absenting himself without leave from his quarters on the 16th July. On 4th August 1914 he was recalled to the colours to rejoin his regiment. He entered the war in France on the 20th August serving with the 9th Field Ambulance. He served throughout the war, being discharged from the army on 17th April 1919. On the 22nd he was re-admitted as three years PC 960, stationed at Blaydon. He voluntarily resigned on 31st January 1920 but was re-admitted as PC 599 on 20th March 1922. He voluntarily resigned again the following 30th April. On 27th September 1922 he was living at 13 Great Mersey Street, Liverpool. [Information researched and kindly provided by John Grainger]
