Robert was appointed to Durham County Constabulary on 4th April 1913 as PC 930, 3rd class constable. The following 27th May he was stationed at Consett, then on the 1st November was appointed a 2nd class PC. When war broke out he was stationed in West Hartlepool, he then moved to Houghton on 2nd September 1914. He was appointed a 1st class PC on 1st May 1915. On 5th September 1915 he resigned from the police force to join the war effort, enlisting with the R.A.M.C. He served throughout the war. On 14th January 1919 he was re-admitted to the police force as 1st class PC 930 and was stationed at Hetton le Hole. He moved to Hetton Downs on 18th March 1920. On 1st May 1923 he had completed 10 years service. On 7th September 1928 he was commended by the Chief Constable and magistrates for tact and intelligence displayed in connection with a case of shop breaking which occurred at Hetton between the 7th and 9th January 1928. He retired on pension on 14th April 1939 but the following 1st August was re-admitted as 1st Police reserve number 0160 and stationed at Hetton le Hole. His service with the police force was terminated on 31st January 1948 [Information researched and kindly provided by John Grainger]
