Frederick was appointed to Hartlepool Borough Police on 29th September 1913 as PC 20. He made a request to join the army on 28th June 1915 but this was refused as too many officers were currently away from the force. On 11th October he resigned from police service and enlisted into the R.A.M.C. He entered the war in Mesopotamia on 24th September 1916 at the rank of serjeant. On 10th July 1918 he was commissioned into the Indian Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was discharged from the army in 1919, and was re-appointed into police service on 10th November 1919. On 20th December 1927 he received promotion to Detective Officer, and from 20th December 1930 gained the rank of Sergeant. A submitted report to resign from the police was accepted by the Watch Committee on 10th June 1940. He died in Hartlepool.
