Of St Helens, Lancashire.
341040 Sjt. W. Gee, R.A.M.C. (St. Helens).
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. For over a period of five days he repeatedly led stretcher squads long distances, over muddy ground, under continual and heavy shell-fire; and on two occasions, aided by another N.C.O. and two men, brought a wounded man down on a stretcher for a distance of 600 yards in the open, through an intense enemy barrage, across ground that was in such terrible condition of mud as to be almost impassable. Throughout the whole of this period he obtained practically no sleep, and by his wonderful example of grit and endurance great work was done by his men.
