Lesley resided at 60 Brunswich Street Maidstone. He enlisted with the 1st Home Counties RAMC TF on 7th April 1915. He was sent to France on 23rd January 1917 and arrived at Le Havre on the 24th January 1917 and served with the 2/1st Home Counties FA. Whilst on duty with the 58th London Division he was badly mustard gassed on 18th April 1918 whilst trying to rescue troops from the cellars of buildings in Villers Brettonneux near Amiens. He was discharged from service 10th July 1919 due to gas poisoning.
