Joseph resided at 77 Union Street. He was a coating machineman. He enlisted with the 1st Home Counties RAMC on 19th October 1914. He was sent to France on 23rd January 1917 and landed at Le Havre on the 24th January 1917 and served with the 2/1st Home Counties FA. Whilst serving with the 58th London Division he was badly mustard gassed on 18th April 1918 at Villiers Bretonneux near Amiens. He was trying to rescue troops from cellars in the town. He remained on duty. He was promoted to Sergeant. He was discharged on 13th March 1919. In 1939 he was working at the papermill and residing at Charlton Street Maidstone. He was awarded the Military Medal on 31st August 1918 for Bravery in the field.
