Appointed as Resident Assistant Medical Officer at Guinness in 1894 working for Dr Harrison Scott.
Started the St James's Gate Division of the St John Ambulance in 1903.
Visited Germany in 1910 to see how they dealt with TB. Witnessed a review of 100,000 German troops parading before Kaiser Wilhelm. On return to Ireland, set about organising VADs, Military Home Hospital Reserve and Auxiliary Royal Naval Sick Berth Reserve.
