Edward enlisted on 28th November 1907. He was 14 years and 1 month old at the time. He entered the war in France on 16th August 1914, as part of the team for the Assistant Director of Medical Services, 2nd Division. On 20th August 1914 he gained promotion to the rank of Corporal. On 3rd June 1918 he was at the Base Depot in Rouen. He then joined the 4th Field Ambulance on 22nd June 1918. On 19th August 1918 he gained further promotion to the rank of Serjeant. On 2nd January 1919 he was re-engaged, but was then discharged from service "no longer physically fit for war service" on 15th November 1919 due to suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis.
