Charles was educated at Lambert Street School, Hull, then became employed in the Advertising Department of the ‘Hull Daily Mail’ and the ‘Hull Times’. He joined the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) in October 1911, and was mobilized at the outbreak of war. He entered the war in France on 20th April 1915, and died at No 1 New Zealand Hospital, Wittes from wounds received whilst assisting wounded soldiers near Hazebrouck on the 12th that month. He was the only son of Samuel and Annie (daughter of Charles Gardner of Hessle) Ruddiforth of 14 Beaconsfield St Queen's Road, Hull.
