Other Information:Richard joined the Medical Services on 31st January 1885, at the rank of
Surgeon Captain. He was present in the expedition against Jebus, Lagos,
West Africa in 1892, being mentioned in despatches [LG 1/7/1892]. He was promoted to Maj on 31st January 1897, and in 1898 served in Sierra Leone, taking part in the Karene Expedition. He was mentioned in despatches [LG 29/12/1899], and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [LG 9/1/1900] - "In recognition of service whilst employed in Sierra Leone." The D.S.O. was presented to him by Lady Caedew, wife of the govenor of Sierra Leone, at a parade of all the troops in garrison in review order 19th May 1900. He retired on pay on 31st January 1905. He died in Queenstown.
