Other Information:

Albert enlisted in November 1915. He was 22 years old; was a grocer’s assistant and salesman by trade; was single and living at 39 Red Hill, Sheffield at the time. He was medically examined on the 19th September 1916, then called up for service on the 30th November 1916, appointed to the Royal Army Medical Corps and was posted to "T" Coy for training on 1st December 1916. His enlistment form states "he was fit for service abroad but not fit for general service". On the 25th January 1917 he was transferred to 312th Field Ambulance based at Cromer, Norfolk. He died of pneumonia - his Service Record states; "No. 98931 undertook Nursing Orderly’s duties at the 192nd Infantry Brigade (312th Field Ambulance) on Saturday 26th October 1918, which at the time was full of serious influenzal cases. On Sunday morning, 27th October 1918, he complained of not feeling well and was immediately put to bed. He was undoubtably suffering from influenza of the severe type prevailing here. His condition however remained favourable until Thursday night 31st October 1918 but as he was no better on Friday evening, 1st November 1918 I decided to send for his mother on Saturday, 2nd November 1918. By that time he had got rapidly worse and died at 0918 on Sunday morning, 3rd November 1918, acute pneumonia having intervened along with severe nervous symptoms." He was the son of Harriet Fretwell, of 39 Red Hill, Sheffield. [Information kindly provided by Chris Ludlam]
