He died of pneumonia - his Service Record states; "No. 98931 undertook Nursing Orderly’s duties at the 192nd Infantry Brigade (312th Field Ambulance) on Saturday 26th October 1918, which at the time was full of serious influenzal cases. On Sunday morning, 27th October 1918, he complained of not feeling well and was immediately put to bed. He was undoubtably suffering from influenza of the severe type prevailing here. His condition however remained favourable until Thursday night 31st October 1918 but as he was no better on Friday evening, 1st November 1918 I decided to send for his mother on Saturday, 2nd November 1918. By that time he had got rapidly worse and died at 0918 on Sunday morning, 3rd November 1918, acute pneumonia having intervened along with severe nervous symptoms."
