Other Information:Michael qualified L.S.A. in 1881 and M.R.C.S. in 1882, then became Hon Physician at the Middlesex Hospital, as well as Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Unit Hospital, Bath.
He gained a commission with the Medical Services, serving as Captain from the 31st January 1885, seeing active service in the Soudan Campaign from 1885 to 1886. On 31st January 1887 he was promoted to Major, then served with the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1890, and in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. He took up the position of Deputy Assistant Director-General from 1st April 1903 to 31st March 1908, during which time he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 31st January 1905. He also became an Instructor in the Medical Services, Staff College at Camberley from 19th April 1910 to December 1914, whilst also serving as Deputy Director of Medical Services in Malta from 24th January 1914 to 14th October 1914, when he returned to England. For his service there he gained promotion to the rank of Colonel on 14th January 1914.
On 15th October 1914 he took up the position of Deputy Director-General, taking over from Surgeon-General Macpherson at the War Office, where he remained until the 26th December 1917, when he was placed on the retired list on account of age, being succeeded by Col T H J C Goodwin. On the 1st March 1918, several senior officers who had been placed on the retired list on reaching the limit of age were re-employed as inspectors of hospitals to assist the Deputy Director of Medical Services, Michael (now acting as Major-General) was one of them - investigating locally the complaints which were continually being sent to the Secretary of State of War, the Director-General, and other War Office officials from various sources regarding medical services. Michael became a member of the British Medical Association.
