Other Information:Charles was educated at Wellington, New Zealand, and at St Mary’s Hospital, London, where he qualified M.R.C.S., D.P.H. in 1901. He was appointed House Surgeon there, then later was appointed House Surgeon at Paddington Green Children’s Hospital.
He joined the R.A.M.C. at the rank of Lieutenant on 30th July 1904, then served in Hong Kong from 1905 - 1908. On 30th January 1908, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. In 1912 he went to Bermuda. He gained further promotion to Major on 1st July 1915, then went to the front on 2nd June 1916 as Deputy Director of Medical Services. After an attack of pericarditis in July he never recovered his health completely.
Letters from officers and friends all testified that charles was bright and amusing, and even though out of health and constantly being advised to go on sick leave or do less work, he refused, loving the work and the life of action. He finally collapsed whilst on horseback and fell to the ground, being dead when he was picked up. Charles was the only son of Charles (a Merchant) and Mary (daughter of Andrew and Ellen Kennedy); and the husband of Christine (daughter of Major John Francis O’Brien). - they were married in London on 1st November 1905 and had two sons.
