Herbert enlisted on 24th December 1914, he was 30 years and 5 months old. He was posted to the 3rd West Riding Reserve until 8th May 1915, when he transferred to the 3/3rd West Riding Field Ambulance. On 1st December he was appointed acting Lance Corporal, and was posted again to the 2/3rd West Riding Field Ambulance on 16th February 1916. Herbert embarked at Southampton on 11th January 1917 – disembarking the next day, he entered the war in France on 12th January 1917. On 18th May 1917, he was admitted into his unit– PUO, but was discharged backed to duty two days later. He received a penetrating gun shot wound to his abdomen and was evacuated back to No 3 Casualty Clearing Station. He died from his wound there. Herbert was the son of Eaton William and Elizabeth Thorpe; and the husband of Ada Thorpe of 312 Gleadless Road, Heeley, Sheffield.
