Other Information:Walter was educated at Buxton College, and Birmingham University, taking the Ingleby and Queen's scholarships, and qualifing M.B., Ch. B. in 1906. He held several resident appointments and then took up public health work, becoming medical officer of the Ongar rural district and a tuberculosis officer for the county of Essex. Being in the Territorial Force he volunteered and was killed in Gallipoli by shrapnel when assisting wounded in the trenches, in the vicinity of Lone Tree Gully, Suvla. The war diary of the 1/3rd East Anglian Field Ambulance (T.F.) noted on 16th August 1915: “The F. Amb. has had the misfortune to lose Capt. W R S Roberts and 260 Sgt. J Curson, both being killed by shrapnel when helping wounded in the trenches occupied by the 162nd Inf. Bde. The unit mourns the loss of those two brave comrades who fell in action whilst carrying out their arduous duty.” Walter was buried that evening, and all who could be spared attended the ceremony. Walter was the son of James and Caroline Roberts of Newport, Salop; and the husband of Laura Anne Roberts (married in 1907) of 3 Redlands, Tiverton, Devon.
