Thomas enlisted into the R.A.M.C. Territorial Force as a nursing orderly on 13th August 1914, he was 19 years old. On enlistment he was posted to serve with the 5th London Field Ambulance but transferred to their 2nd line unit, the 2/5th London Field Ambulance on 20th February 1915. On 1st January 1917 he was transferred again to the 314th Field Ambulance. He served a few months in Ireland and then as a reinforcement, embarked at Southampton on 4th January 1918 for Havre, France, disembarking the next day he then embarked again for Rouen and joined the 18 CC Cyclist's Base Depot on the 7th, he was then posted to serve at No 10 General Hospital on the 14th. On 21st May 1918, Thomas was admitted into No 10 General Hospital as a casualty and was sent back to England on the 8th June on the hospital Ship "Carisbrooke Castle" and was admitted into a Military Hospital in Cosham, Hampsire. Thomas was discharged physically unfit on 4th February 1919. He was the son of Mrs A Hunter of Brightside House, The Woodlands, Hither Green, London.
