Wilfred enlisted on 17th May 1915 into the 2nd Northumbrian Divisional Field Ambulance TF and served in their 3rd line unit - 3/2nd Northumbrian Field Ambulance. He lived at 12 Rayleigh Grove, Bensham, Gateshead, Durham and was 19 years and 1 month old. On 6th November 1916, he was transferred to the Regular RAMC, his service number became 89074 and he was posted to “Y” Coy. He embarked at Southampton on 18th November 1916 and entered the war in Rouen, France on the 20th. On the 28th, Wilfred was posted to No 33 Field Ambulance and served with this unit throughout the war. On 7th January 1918, he proceeded to England and was transferred to Z Reserve on 5th February. He was finally discharged on 31st March 1920.
