Other Information:John attested, and was embodied into the 3/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance, on 29th May 1915. He was 23 years and 6 months old; was employed as a Baker; and was living at 45 Tichfield Street, Galson at the time.
He embarked on 9th September 1915 and went to Gallipoli, arriving on the 19th. On 25th he joined the 1/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance in the field and was taken on strength. On 22nd January 1916 he arrived in Alexandria. He was admitted into hospital due to sickness on 26th August, being discharged back to duty on the 2nd September. On 10th April 1918, he embarked on H.M.S. ‘Caledonia’ with the 1/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance and headed for France, disembarking at Marseilles on 17th. *About 4.00 a.m. on 27th May 1918 the enemy started to shell St Eloi, with the first shell landing on one of the huts occupied by the personnel of this unit. This incident resulted in 10 O/Rs being slightly wounded, 6 O/Rs being severely wounded, 10 O/Rs were instantaneously killed, and 5 O/Rs died from wounds.
