Other Information:John enlisted into the 2nd Lowland Division Field Ambulance on 29th April 1913. He was 20 years old and a builder by trade. He embarked at Southampton on 9th June 1915, then disembarking at Port Said on 25th entered the war in Egypt with the 1/2nd Lowland Field Ambulance. On 10th April 1918, he embarked on H.M.S. "Caledonia" with the unit and headed for France, disembarking at Marseilles on 17th. *About 4.00 a.m. on 27th May 1918 the enemy started to shell St Eloi, with the first shell landing on one of the huts occupied by the personnel of this unit. This incident resulted in 10 O/Rs being slightly wounded, 6 O/Rs being severely wounded, 10 O/Rs were instantaneously killed, and 5 O/Rs died from wounds. John was the son of Alexander and Mary Thomson of 315 Eglinton Street, Glasgow.
