Other Information:

Hugh was educated at the Roman Catholic Schools, Edinburgh, then became a Stockbroker’s Clerk by trade. He joined the 9th Royal Scots (T.F.) in March 1908 and served with them for four years. At the outbreak of war, he volunteered for overseas service and enlisted into the R.A.M.C. on 28th September 1914. He entered the war in France in June 1916. Hugh died at No 64 Casualty Clearing Station of wounds received at Comines.A Serjeant wrote to Hugh’s family: “Hugh was a Roman Catholic amongst Protestants and others, and his life and unrelenting devotion to duty was such that I have seldom seen a cross or palm since I left him but I have thought of him. It was a sad moment, indeed, when I read that our Hughie had been called to give - nay, had offered - the supreme sacrifice in the cause of love and freedom.” Hugh was the only son of Francis and Catherine [daughter of Peter Toole of Galashiels] Cullen of 14 Gayfield Square, Edinburgh; and the husband of Helen (daughter of Daniel Martin) Cullen of 4 West Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow - married in the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh on 30th September 1916.
