Other Information:Alfred enlisted into the army on 17th June 1902 in London, with his previous
employment being given as an Indoor Servant. After departure from Phoenix Park, Dublin, he entered the war in France on 20th August 1914 with the 14th Field Ambulance and served with the unit for the duration of the war. He was first mentioned in Field Marshall Sir John French's dispatch of 20 November 1914 and then later in General Sir Douglas Haig's dispatch of 14 November 1916: both were "For gallant and distinguished services in the field" He was also entered in "The Honours and Awards to the Old Contemptibles", published by the Army and Navy Gazette in 1915. In 1919, Alfred was awarded the Army Meritorious Service Medal "In recognition of valuable service rendered with the Armies in France and Flanders." At the end of hostilities Alfred returned home to the UK and was transferred as Quartermaster Sergeant to 8 Coy. In 1919 he was shipped overseas for service in Iraq, earning himself the General Service Medal with Iraq clasp. His service number changed to 7245221. Alfred was pensioned from the Army on 16th June 1924, and after 22 years service left the Royal Army Medical Corps as a fully trained nurse, a qualified assistant radiographer and also a masseur.
