Herbert entered the war in France on the 12th September 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry; by his energy and promptness, he was able to transfer helpless wounded to cellars during the heavy shelling of the field ambulance. His bravery and devotion undoubtedly saved many lives."
