Other Information:Having already served in the R.A.M.C. Militia - service number 116, James enlisted into the Regular R.A.M.C. on 14th March 1903. He was 18 years and 8 months old, and a Labourer by trade. He served with 14 Coy, being trained in first aid, and ambulance and nursing duties, he was then transferred to Army Reserve on 15th March 1906. James was mobilized for war service on 5th August 1914 and entered the war in France on the 12th September. On 9th August 1915, when in action at Hooge, he received a gunshot wound to the spine. A shrapnel ball was removed from his spinal canal but he was paralysed below the coil of the Dorset Vertebrae. He was discharged no longer physically fit for war service on 1st March 1916, he was now 31 years and 7 months old. He received a pension and his last known address from 4th April 1917, was recorded as Hilden Convalescent Hospital, Galwally Park, Belfast. [Portrait photograph courtesy of Nigel Henderson]
