John entered the war in France on 12th October 1914 with the 17th Field Ambulance. He was serving with the 19th Field Ambulance when he went into the field at Erquinghem for a rest, by sitting in the sun near the river, with 12278 t.WOII George Henry Male and 17454 S/Sjt Edward Cecil Allport when a shell came over and fatally wounded them all.
