With a family background of quarrying, building and farming, Abraham became a stone mason and builder. He married Lucy Emma Taylor in 1895 and later lived at 19 Water Street, Whitworth, Rochdale, Lancashire. A member of the St Johns Ambulance Brigade, Rochdale Branch, Abraham joined the army on Saturday 8th August 1914, aged 41. He was invalided back to the UK from the Somme area in October 1916 and was then stationed at Aldershot and then Blackpool. On the 28th August 1917, Abraham went in front of a Medical Board and was re-categorized from Cii to Bi, he was then sent back to France transferred to 236 Divisional Employment Company, 39th Division.
