Other Information:Herbert qualified L.S.A. on 14th April 1899, and L.M.S.S.A. in 1907. Having served in the R.A.M.C. from 1899 to 1905, when he retired he enlisted into their Special Reserve. He settled in practice at The Rosary, St Mary's Church, Torquay.
On 9th August 1914, at 1 p.m., he joined the 8th Field Ambulance, then entered the war in France, with the unit, on the 21st. He was placed on their sick list on 3rd September 1914, then on the 7th September was sent with 3 ambulance wagons loaded with sick and wounded, 3 officers & 9 men to transfer to M.T. at Lumigny. He was then invalided home.
On recovery he was appointed Principle Medical Officer at Witley Camp, Surrey. In September 1915, he was put in medical command of the Hospital Ship "Braemar Castle", serving with the ship until 24th June 1916 when he received orders that he should proceed to the hospital ship “Assaye” to take charge there.
He was serving on H.S. "Assaye" when his eldest son 2nd Lt, Herbert Charles Dalby of the 11th Bn. The York and Lancaster Regiment was killed in action on 1st July 1916.
On 9th February 1917 he was admitted into hospital suffering with Malaria. He returned to hospital on 7th October 1917, this time suffering with appendicitis. He was transferred to the hospital ship “Vasna” for conveyance to Basra on the 11th. He died in Basra after an operation for appendicitis and peritonitis. He was the husband of Molly Edith (daughter of Joseph Roberts) Dalby of Valetta, Babbacombe, Torquay.
