Other Information:Ernest enlisted on 16th October 1914. He was 19 years old, and a boot repairer by trade. He entered the war in France on 1st May 1915 and was posted to serve with the 2nd Field Ambulance, joining them in the field. In a memo dated 26th June 1915, the Deputy Director of Medical Services, 1st Division, wrote that he wished to bring to notice the names of men, who under the guidance of the officers commanding bearers of No 1 & 2 Field Ambulances, advanced in front of their new line on the night of the 18th May 1915 and under shell fire succeeded in bringing in 3 wounded to the trench - Ernest was on the list of names. In September 1915 he received a wound to his leg and was evacuated back to the UK, via No 2 Canadian Hospital, Le Treport, and was admitted into the 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge on 5th October 1915. He returned to the Western Front, and on 16th October 1916 was awarded the Good Conduct Medal whilst serving with the 65th Field Ambulance. When discharged he was serving with the 4th Training Battalion, R.A.M.C. He was the son of Alice Butler of High Street, Solihull.
