Other Information:John enlisted on 2nd November 1906. He was 18 years and 7 months old, and was a general labourer by trade. He entered the war in France on 19th August 1914 with the 2nd Field Ambulance. On 26th September 1915 he was wounded, receiving a shell wound to his right foot. He was evacuated back to the UK from No 3 General Hospital on 30th September, via the Hospital Ship “Oxfordshire”.
After recovering, on 19th April 1914 he embarked at Southampton for Basra, disembarking there on 16th May 1916. He was taken on strength of the 40th Field Ambulance on 28th. In July 1916 he began suffering from malaria. During bouts of illness, and being in and out of hospital, he was posted to serve with No 32 British General Hospital in Asmara on 19th February 1917; No 24 British General Hospital on 18th July 1917, and No 133 British General Hospital on 23rd September 1917. On 13th April 1918 he embarked for India, where he remained until 24th November 1919 when he embarked to return to the UK.
John continued to serve after the war, his service number changing to 7245642. He was 31 years old when he discharged from the army.
