Other Information:Alfred lived in South Acton. He entered the war in France on the 7th October 1914. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in charge of a relay post. Hearing of wounded men lying under fire, he made four journeys through the barrage, being blown upon the first journey, but bringing four men in on his back. Later, a shell burst at his post, killing and burying eleven men. He restored order, organised a rescue party, and brought out the eleven men.
