Other Information:

George enlisted on 3rd September 1914. He was 20 years old and a Salesman by trade. He was admitted into hospital on 1st May 1915 suffering with pneumonia and remained there for 28 day. On 9th July 1915, he embarked at Southampton with the 46th Field Ambulance, then disembarking at Havre the next day, entered the war in France on 10th July 1915. He was admitted into hospital again on 28th July 1916 having caught influenza and returned to the UK, he remained there for 34 days. On 7th November 1916, he returned to France, via Southampton and Rouen, and on the 14th he was posted to serve with the 1st Cavalry Field Ambulance, in the field. He was awarded the Military Medal whilst serving with this unit. He was admitted into No 17 Casualty Clearing Station on 29th August 1918 suffering again with influenza, and was transferred to the 2nd Canadian General Hospital, via No 7 Ambulance Train, and then returned again to England on H.S. “Calisbrook Castle.” arriving on 30th August 1918. George never recovered. He was the son of William George and Elizabeth Hayward of 47 Chapel Street, Pleck, Walsall, Staffs. [Portrait photograph of George kindly provided by Graeme Clark]
