Other Information:Alfred first entered the war in France on the 25th August 1915; disembarking at Le Havre. Alfred was seriously wounded sometime during Aug/Sep 1917 in the general vicinity of Ypres and was evacuated to the UK, where he was hospitalized in Queen Mary's Military Hospital, Whalley, Lancs. He was discharged on the 4th October 1917 "no longer physically fit for war service". Alfred was the brother of William Charles (also served with the RAMC) and the son of William Charles and Ellen Matthews (nee Talmash) of Highland Cottage, Lock's Road, Sarisbury, Hants. He received the Silver War Badge (1917), the 1915 Star (1919), and the Victory and British War Medal (1920). [Information and photo: special thanks to Brian Matthews]
