Other Information:Cpl Cooper lived in Bethnal Green. He entered the war in France on the 30th May 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He was in charge of bearers in a position where casualties were numerous and evacuation most difficult. In order to lead the way for squads, he continually crossed ground swept by shell fire, and although several bearers had been killed there, he carried on with complete disregard of personal safety. During this work, a badly wounded man had been placed on a stretcher when a shell burst close by. With the greatest gallantry and devotion Corporal Cooper immediately jumped between the shell and the wounded man in order to shelter him. Throughout the operation he displayed exceptional courage and fearlessness."
