Other Information:Harold enlisted on 20th February 1915. He was 29 years and 5 months old and was a butcher by trade. He entered the war in the Balkans on 11th July 1915, then joined the 40th Field Ambulance, in the field, on 5th November. He embarked at Port Said on the 14th February 1916 and sailed to Basra, disembarking on 1st March. On 10th April he received a gun shot wound in the head, then recovered and returned to duty on 8th May. Harold then became ill and died of dysentery in a field hospital in Filayieh. He was the son of William and Emily Smith of 1 Hardy Terrace, Crook, Co. Durham.
