In the 1901 census George was living as the adopted son of the Green family living at Hightown Heights, Liversedge, Yorks. Age 18+  He was employed as a Coal hewer, and was married to Etty Cordingley (born  1885 in Heckmondwick, Yorks) in Dewsbury in 1905. He served in the Volunteer Reserve (1903-05) and as 236 G.A. Stables in the 4th Bn. of the West Riding Regiment (1908-09). In the 1911 census George and Etty were living at Alexandra Street, Hightown, Liversedge, Yorks, an address they occupied from 1908 to 1940 according to the electoral rolls. The house was given the number 13 Alexandra Street during the inter-war years.  In 1911 George was employed as a labourer in a leather works.  He and Etty had a daughter, Elsie, born in 1909. George’s WW1 Army papers do not survive but his WW1 Medal Index Card shows that he was serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps as 28140 Private George A. Stables.  In 1918 he was awarded a Military Medal (MM) for Gallantry whilst serving with 139th Field Ambulance.  His MM is confirmed to 139 FA at the National Archives and his medal carries "139 F.A. RAMC". His London Gazette entry confirms his home was in Liversedge. When he died his death was registered in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. [Information researched and kindly provided by Anthony Taylor]
