Other Information:John was educated at Ardossan Academy and from 1904 at Glasgow High School. He played for the 1st XV in 1909/10. Whilst taking the medical course at the University, he joined the O.T.C. and was in training at Aldershot when war broke out. He graduated in April 1916. During the vacations of 1915 and 1916 John did valuable work in military hospitals in Bournemouth and Glasgow. In September 1916 he went to France with the 103rd Field Ambulance, and five months later he received his Captaincy and was appointed gas officer to the Division. In the Battle of Arras he acted as "Bearer" Officer and won the MC for his splendid work. Shortly after the Field Ambulance was transferred to Belgium where he was killed by a shell entering a dugout in which he was attending to his cases, the shell killed everyone who was in it.
