William entered the war in France on 21st May 1915. He was killed during the fighting on the Menin Road. “The bearers went up into the line in front of Hooge, to Clapham junction, clearing from Glencorse Wood and Inverness Copse-names of hateful memory. The second phase of the battle had commenced on the 16th, but Fritz had elaborated his pill-box system of defence, and our division had a warm reception. On 22nd August they' attacked astride the Menin road, and after six days of continuous local fighting, established themselves in the western edge of Inverness Copse' (official dispatches). Our bearers had a rough week. Broomhead and Cole were killed, and Breckell died of wounds.” (Taken from the book ‘With the Forty Fourths’) William was the husband of Margaret S Cole of 28 Chester Road, Watford.
