Other Information:Charles enlisted on 1st November 1915, aged 20 years 10 months and joined the RAMC at Aldershot on 4th November 1915. On the 6th November 1916 he embarked from Southampton as part of reinforcements for the BEF and disembarked in Rouen the following day. On 14th November 1916 he was posted to 58th Field Ambulance joining them ‘in the field’. He was wounded in action on 31st December 1917 but returned to duty the following day. He was again wounded in action on 3rd September 1918, suffering very severe extensive shrapnel wounds to both buttocks and left leg during a Divisional (19th Western Division) attack near Gonneham, France. Three of his colleagues from the 58th Field Ambulance were killed on the same day and are buried in Gonneham British Cemetery. He was admitted to the 57th Field Ambulance then moved on to the 32nd Casualty Clearing Station and reached the 14th General Hospital at Wimereux on 7th September 1918. On 8th September 1918 he was moved back to the UK on HMHS Cambria and admitted to the 3rd Northern General Hospital in Sheffield but died of his wounds at 8am on 23rd November 1918.
