Samuel attested on 4th December 1914. He was 33 years old; a machinist by trade; and living at 44 Montgomery Street, Belfast at the time. He joined the R.A.M.C. the same day at Belfast and was at some point posted to serve with the 109th Field Ambulance, but does not appear to have served abroad. Samuel complained of pain in his left side and of having a slight shortness of breath. He was diagnosed with Valvular Disease of the heart and was discharged on 20th July 1915 in consequence of being permanently unfit for war service. Samuel was the son of Thomas and Ellen Miles; and the husband of Mary.
