Thomas lived in Derby. He entered the war in Egypt on the 18th July 1915. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on many occasions during operations. He always exhibited the greatest courage and coolness in supervising the evacuation of the wounded, frequently under heavy shell fire, and his splendid example was an inspiration to his men."
