Other Information:Geoffrey was educated at Darlington Grammar School; at Trinity College, Cambridge; and at St Bartholomew's Hospital - entering in 1911, he obtained the diplomas of M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1914. He joined the R.A.M.C. at the outbreak of war, and after six months of duty as anaesthetist at a base hospital in England, then went to Le Treport with a hospital unit, thus entering the war in France on 19th February 1915. Whilst carrying out his regular duties, he also had charge of surgical huts and acted as honorary secretary and treasurer of the officers’ mess. Geoffrey was later promoted to the rank of captain. He became attached to the West Riding Regiment as their Medical Officer in 1917, then soon after served with the 35th Field Ambulance. He was temporarily attached as medical officer to the 5th Bn. Dorset Regiment when the regimental aid post he was working in received a direct hit from enemy artillery, causing him wounds which shortly proved fatal. Geoffrey was the son of Walter Spencer and Sarah Anna Cowper of 67 Duke Street, Darlington.
