Other Information:Herbert enlisted on 14th October 1915. He was 23 years old and a Clerk by trade. He joined at Uxbridge and was then posted to serve with "T" Coy on the 15th. He was transferred to serve with the 133rd Field Ambulance on 22nd December 1915. He embarked at Southampton on 5th March 1916, then disembarking the next day at Havre he entered the war in France on 6th March 1916. On 12th May 1917, 6 O.R’s were working in a dressing station at the Asylum when a shell made a direct hit and went down the back stairs killing 4 and wounding 2 of them. Herbert received multiple shell wounds and died on arrival at No 10 Casualty Clearing Station. The other's killed were 88007 Pte A C Caunt, 90749 Pte W M Timpson, and 61515 Pte D L Boyle. The 2 wounded were 65127 S/Sjt J H Smith and 69593 Pte A B Clarke. Herbert was the son of George and Alice Tillyard of Canal Cottage, Greenford Green, Harrow, Middlesex.
