Alfred enlisted into the RAMC on 2nd October 1915, and was posted to Y Coy on the 5th. He was 19 years and 1 month old and a clerk by trade. On 15th March 1916, he embarked at Southampton on S.S. “Q. Alexandra”, disembarking at Rouen the next day. On 23rd March, Alfred was posted to serve with No 8 Casualty Clearing Station at Bailleul and remained there until 10th November, when he was admitted into No 2 Casualty Clearing Station suffering with Influenza. He was discharged on the 1st December but appears to have remained with the unit. On 31st May 1917, he was appointed acting Lance Corporal - without pay. He went on leave from the 16th - 26th September, and on return was granted acting Lance Corporal - with pay. Alfred was admitted as a patient again in October 1917. On 18th - 22nd June 1918, he was admitted into No 58 Casualty Clearing Station and then No 23 Casualty Clearing Station on 30th June - 19th July 1918, all due to Influenza. He was granted leave for 14 days on 27th September, returning on 4th October. On the 11th January 1919, Alfred was appointed acting Serjeant - without pay. He was posted to serve with No 57 Casualty Clearing Station on 2nd April and was appointed Sergeant with pay - granted from 9th January 1919. He was given 14 days leave from 20th May - 3rd June 1919. On the 25th July, he proceeded to England for demobilization, remaining at Boulogne until 30th July, he was finally discharged at Shorncliffe on 27th August 1919 having served 3 years and 330 days.
