Other Information:William enlisted on 1st August 1899. He was 22 years old, and was a Clerk by trade. He served in South Africa from 1899 to 1902, earning both the King's and the Queen's South African medal with clasps. During this time he was appointed the rank of Lance Corporal on 20th August 1901, and gained promotion to the rank of Corporal on 8th october 1902. He entered the war in France on 16th August 1914 as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 1st Bn. Cheshire Regiment. On 10th February 1915 he was posted to serve with the 14th Field Ambulance, then he gained promotion to the rank of Serjeant on 15th March 1915. He was mentioned in despatches "for gallantry and devotion to duty in the field" whilst serving with the 14th Field Ambulance. On 2nd May 1919 he proceeded to England and was posted to serve with No 1 Coy on 27th June 1919. On 23rd September he was posted to serve with No 10 Coy, then was discharged from the Colours on 31st July 1920.
