Other Information:James qualified M.B. at Durham University. He entered the R.A.M.C. on 31st July 1905 at the rank of Lieutenant. He served in Egypt 1906-1908 and then Gibraltar 1908-1911. During this time he was promoted to Captain on the 31st January 1909. James was stationed at Cobham when war was declared. He entered the war in France on the 13th August 1914 as Regimental Medical Officer for the 1st Bn. Gordon Highlanders. He was reported missing during the Battle of Mons, then unofficially reported as a prisoner of war (Lancet 17/10/1914). On 5th September 1914, just as the retreat from Mons had ended, he was sent to Germany as a POW with Lt E S B Hamilton, Maj H W Long, and Capt H M J Perry - all of the R.A.M.C. On 15th October 1915, James was promoted to Major. He was put on half pay on 9th December 1917 due to ill health. He eventually retired (ill Health) on 9th December 1922. He died at Darlington.
