Other Information:Charles enlisted on 6th May 1913. He was a General Labourer by trade, and lived at 52 North Howard Street, Belfast, Ireland. He first served in India and South Africa. He entered the war in France on 15th August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 2nd Bn. Kings Own Scottish Borderers but was taken captive on 22nd October 1914 and taken to a prisoner of war camp in Germany. He was repatriated in August 1915. On 2nd September 1915 he embarked at Southampton to serve on the hospital ship "Delta", serving onboard in the Mediterranean. On 6th June 1916 he was re-posted to serve on the hospital ship "Neuralia". He was admitted into hospital on 12th July 1916, then, when he was discharged on the 18th July, was sent to Base Depot who posted him to serve with No 9 Motor Ambulance Corps, Salonica. On 29th December 1916 he was hospitalised suffering with Malaria. He remained in Salonika until 12th October 1918 but was thereafter treated for malaria in Nos 29, 62,63 and 82 General Hospitals, as well as serving in various other medical units. After returning to the UK, on 3rd January 1919, he was sent to the Malarial Concentration Camp in Blackpool. He was transferred to the reserves on 12th April 1919.
