Other Information:Edward lived at 14 Huntingfield Road, Putney, SW15. He enlisted into the Medical Staff Corps on 10th March 1897. He was 18 years and 10 months old; and was a Fishmonger by trade. Between 1898 and 1910 he saw service in Jamaica, South Africa, and Sierra Leone. On 10th March 1909 he gained promotion to the rank of Corporal. He entered the war in France on 22nd August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 1st Bn. Rifle Brigade. His name is on a list of R.A.M.C. personnel who were taken captive by the Germans up to & including 31st December 1914 [List kindly provided by Steve Mattocks]. He was captured on 26th August 1914, then taken to the prisoner of war camp 'Doberitz' in Germany on 14th September 1914. He was repatriated on 29th June 1915. During this time, on 15th June 1915, he was promoted to the rank of Serjeant. On 30th September 1915 he embarked for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, arriving on 4th February 1916. He embarked for the M.E.F., Bombay on 2nd August 1916, remaining there until 19th March 1917 when he embarked for the Suez. He arrived the next day. On 7th July 1917 he embarked for Salonika, arriving on the 10th. He was appointed acting Staff Serjeant, with pay, on 4th June 1917, but reverted back to his permanent rank of Serjeant on 24th December 1917. He then retained the acting rank whilst employed with the Malaria Mission in Salonika. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal whilst serving with the Malaria Enquiry Laboratory of the British Salonica Force. He left Salonika on the 22nd February 1918.
