Other Information:Alfred enlisted on 17th March 1908. He was 18 years and 6 months old, and was a Bank Attendant by trade. He entered the war in France on 23rd August 1914, as part of the Regimental Medical Officer's team for the 1st Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers, serving with "C" Company. Around 30th October 1914 he suffered a gun shot wound to his leg and was evacuated back to England. On 28th January 1915 he was posted to serve with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He was due to join the hospital ship "Neuralia" for duty on 7th January 1916 but was absent when the ship set sail. He returned to England on 27th November 1915. In 1916 he was posted to serve with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force. He was appointed acting Lance Corporal on 24th October 1916, then reverted back to his permanent rank of Private on 6th March 1917. He was again appointed acting Lance Corporal on 20th April 1917. On 26th November 1917 he was discharged "no longer physically fit for war service" having suffered a nervous breakdown.
