Other Information:John was educated at George Watson's Collage - entering in 1888, and at Edinburgh University, qualifying M.B., Ch.B. in 1898; M.D. in 1901; M.R.C.P. in 1902 and F.R.C.S. in 1903. After qualifying he served as Honorary Physician at the Monsall Fever Hospital, Manchester and Honorary Surgeon at the Ear, Nose & Throat Department at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
On 1st November 1906, he became Surgeon-Lieutenant of the 9th Volunteer Battalion (Highlanders), The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), then become Surgeon-Lieutenant of the R.A.M.C. (T.F.) on 1st April 1908. He gained promotion to captain in 1910.
John entered the war in France in April 1915, serving with the 9th Bn. Royal Scots as their medical officer. He was wounded in both legs below the knee during the second Battle of Ypres, and was for a while hospitalised at Boulogne. After recovering he went to Malta in 1917, then served with No 63 General Hospital in Salonika from 1917 - 1919. In November 1918, he gained further promotion to the rank of Major.
John was the son of Robert Bowie, and a nephew of Rev. J S Bowie of the United Free Church, West Port, Edinburgh. [Photograph kindly provided by John Duncan]
