Other Information:Alastair was educated at Gordon’s College, Aberdeen and at Aberdeen University, where he qualified M.A. in 1898 and M.B. in 1903. He held the appointments of Bacteriologist and Deputy Minister of Health; of Croydon Assistant Medical Officer; of Medical Officer at the Brook and Grove Fever Hospitals, London; of Assistant Medical Superintendent St Pancras Infirmary; and was Medical Officer at the Prestea Hospital, Gold Coast when war broke out. As soon as he was relieved, Alistair resigned his medical appointment in West Africa and joined the R.A.M.C. - gazetted Captain in December 1916. He joined the 1/2nd Highland Field Ambulance but was shortly after posted as Medical Officer to the 1/6th Seaforths. He was awarded the Military Cross “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He tended and dressed the wounded under heavy fire, displaying great courage and determination throughout.” - This took place during the Battle of Beaumont Hamel on 13th November 1916. He died from a shell wound received whilst in discharge of his duties north of Ypres in the action of July 1917. His Commanding officer wrote: “He was a fearless officer, and most unselfishly devoted to the work of his profession. He was beloved by all, and we shall miss him deeply.” Alistair was the youngest son of John and Margaret Peter of Monaliadh, Inverness.
